Making Linux boot media... on Windows (ISOs Explained)
Linux boot media need not be tricky! In today's episode, I'll talk about four ways to flash an ISO from Windows (and other systems too).
I know a lot of you are switching to Linux because of Microsoft's recent... ideas? I'll call them "ideas".
So, here we'll talk about the following ways to flash ISOs:
- BalenaEtcher: etcher.balena.io/
- Raspberry Pi Imager: www.raspberrypi.com/software/
- Fedora Media Writer (you can just download this when you go to download Fedora, but here's the GitHub): github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter
- Rufus: rufus.ie/
And I referenced the following four reasonably-beginner-friendly distros (in no particular order):
- Linux Mint: linuxmint.com/
- Ubuntu: ubuntu.com
- Fedora: ...

I love my modded 5th gen iPod! I have found myself having to use iTunes on a Windows VM for syncing sadly. I couldn't find anyway to get Rhythmbox to sync the album art I have painstakingly embedded into the metadata of my whole library. If anyone knows how to get that to work, I would love to sync it natively on my linux machine instead

I hate when people change the meaning of the word open source. Open source means the source is available to the public, but it does not mean you can feed off other people's work for free and be mad. Don't add extra meaning to a word just because you want to! Open-source projects always had a license. It doesn't matter what the license is, it's still open source. If an open-source project doesn't have a license, that doesn't mean you can do anything with it.

I decided that my inherited Lenovo C540 All In One (not Windows 11 up-gradable) needed to switch to Linux. So I blanked the hard drive and installed MXLinux on it. It works great. However on an older computer I had installed an LXLE distribution. I like LXLE MUCH better, but as you probably know, it is no longer being developed and is based on Ubuntu. Long ago, I was having issues with LXLE being unable to access Ubuntu repositories without a lot of intervention by me (before this problem, it was by far the easiest Linux updating I had ever come across). Seeing that Linux Mint has been Ubuntu based, and that LMDE was only just starting development, pushed me to MXLinux. I now may revisit that decision and install LMDE. However, I do really miss the simplicity and familiarity of LXLE.

@VeronicaExplains I'm a fairly advanced Linux user (starting with Slackware in 1994) so most of your videos cover topics I'm already versed in, but I still enjoy watching them for the presentation style. You're a sort of Mister Rogers of the Linux community, simultaneously teaching a topic to the "little ones" while serving as an example to us "big kids" on how to explain things clearly, concisely, and with doses of gentle humor. Well done!

why do we add our user to libvirt & kvm groups? Why don't we add to the libvirt-qemu group? I notice that that's who owns the /var/lib/libvirt/qemu directory, which is empty after installing & running Windows 10 just to boot it & get the internet working. Is the reason we don't add us to that group becuz it only exists since libvirt-qemu is also a user & users all get their own named group? So unlike whatever purpose those other two groups serve, it is not relevant? I also notice groups libvirt & kvm have no one in them according to 'getent group', tho 'groups libvirt-qemu' tells me that that user is in group kvm, so maybe 'getent group' doesn't really tell you who is in a given group.

*takes a year to respond to video, distracted by Bop-It vibes* This is a spectacular video. I've saved it to send to anyone who's considering Mastodon but is overwhelmed about how to use it. I love your emphasis on the fact that social media shouldn't make us more anxious. That has been lost by ... so many people. Thanks for making this. I think, coming to y'all live from the everything-is-going-great period of August 2024, that the Great Mastodon Migration that the tech press predicted never happened because regular users of Twitter and Facebook use Twitter and Facebook because of network effects. There was no inclination to move to something new where your community wasn't, especially when too many Mastodon devs and instance admins disclaimed any responsibility for community building or ease of use. Emphasis on building hyper-local- or affinity group-focused Mastodon instances makes a lot more sense. I wonder if you've seen more of those pop up in the last year? After watching your video, I'd still like to spin up my own single-user Mastodon server, but more just to see if I can do it and to use it as a backup or connecting hub for my presence on other Mastodon or Fediverse servers. I'm still not sure I understand what happens to all my content if I don't have my own server and decide I don't like the server I'm on. I've been using Bluesky for about a month, and I like it, but at the end of the day, it just feels like 2007 Twitter with a few modern features (and lacking several features that I'm surprised it doesn't have, like some sort of way for me to see post metrics). It's great, and clearly a lot of people need and love the experience it provides, but it feels small, and I'm not really sure where it's going. It's not the kind of small that's local; it's the kind of small that's a small group of very enthusiastic people having a party in a huge abandoned warehouse. Often, I feel like I'm shouting into a clique-y void. Something about using it just feels ... off.

I'm old school which ain't so old. I won't have a computer without a DVD/CD drive. I also use USB but not going to quit CD and DVD. My vehicle must have a CD player. I may not play too many CDs but it's nice to know I have it when I want to play CDs.. I also have a floppy drive I can plug in when I need it. I learned to program a computer on punch cards and that was when computers were fun. I'm hoping Linux will bring back the fun. Anyone can flop in a program or now days an app. But just running a program ain't fun anymore. Basic was fun, cobol and Fortran was fun. Since Fortran did not have display options back then you could use cobol and run Fortran subroutines that was fun. Basic was fun when you wrote your own programs no licenses needed. 73

Gemini 1.5 Pro: The video is about how to set up a Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM) on a Linux machine. The speaker, Veronica, first explains what a hypervisor is and why virtual machines are useful. Then, she dives into the steps to set up KVM on a Linux machine. Here are the steps in detail: 1. Make sure your system has enabled all of the virtualization tools needed in the firmware. You can check this by running the `egrep` command. If the number displayed by the command is more than zero, you’re good to go. If it’s zero, you’ll need to go into your BIOS and enable virtualization. 2. Install the necessary packages. The specific packages you need will vary depending on your distro, but Veronica recommends installing the following packages on Ubuntu-based systems: * `qemu-kvm` * `qemu-utils` * `libvirt-daemon` * `bridge-utils` * `virt-manager` 3. After installing the packages, you’ll need to add your user to the kvm and libvirt group. You can usually do this by running the following command: * `sudo usermod -a -G kvm libvirt <username>` 4. Next, you’ll need to start the libvirt daemon and enable it to start on boot. You can do this by running the following commands: * `sudo systemctl start libvirtd` * `sudo systemctl enable libvirtd` 5. Now you’re ready to create a virtual machine. Veronica recommends using Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager) for this. 6. In virt-manager, you’ll need to create a storage pool for your ISO files. A storage pool is just an area of storage that you’ve set aside for your VMs and disk images. 7. Once you’ve created a storage pool, you can browse to the ISO file that you want to install. virt-manager will automatically detect the operating system from the ISO name and apply some sane defaults. 8. The next step is to allocate memory and CPU cores to your VM. Veronica recommends giving the VM 4 GB of memory if you have 32 GB on your machine, and 2 GB of memory if you have 8 GB on your machine. You can also specify the number of CPU cores that you want the VM to use. 9. In the storage section, you can specify the amount of storage that you want to allocate to your VM. Veronica recommends creating a separate pool for your VM storage on a separate SSD if you have one. 10. The last step is to name your virtual machine and review your configuration. Once you’re happy with everything, hit finish and virt-manager will create your VM. Veronica also talks about two of her favorite features of KVM: snapshots and USB redirection. Snapshots allow you to roll back your virtual machine to an earlier state. This can be very useful if you’re a sysadmin or developer and you need to roll back some changes. USB redirection allows you to use a USB device from your host computer inside your virtual machine. Overall, the video is a great introduction to KVM for beginners. Veronica does a good job of explaining the concepts in a clear and concise way, and she provides step-by-step instructions for setting up KVM on a Linux machine.

But I need a linux so small I could put the shelter's required Chrome browser on it and still have room for things to work well. At this moment I'm typing on a Chromebook I bought for $5 at a yard sale and also turned into a Linux laptop. It has 16g ssd and about 80% of it is full running Mint Cinnamon's latest version.

@ Veronica Explains : another snag i just hit. I followed the ssh-copy-id command and it copied the public key to my debian 12 server..but when I try to ssh into my debian 12 server it is asking for the server password and not the passphase. I rebooted the server just in case, but same result still asking for the server password. Not sure what went awry. Also trying to setup Remmina to do the ssh into the server, it's asking for the passphrase when I use Remmina but it doesn't connect. With Remmina I get : "Could not start ssh session. Socket error: disconnected" SMH I rebooted my local client machine and Logged into the Mint 21.3 cinnamon rather than under ICEWM and now logging into Debian 12 server under Remmina works.

@ Veronica Explains : what do you do when you try to do the "sudo systemctl enable sshd" and it comes back with error : "Failed to enable unit: Refusing to operate on alias name or linked unit file: sshd.service" so this command gave an error when trying to follow your video. I have Debian 12 Standard installed on my Tiny Lenovo M710q. How to correct this? Edit : hmm okay, I rebooted my Deb 12 server, and the ssh daemon service started on reboot when checking the sshd status. Not sure if I needed to do that "sudo systemctl enable sshd" step.
